The Ministry of Health (MOH), St. Kitts and Nevis, is actively monitoring respiratory illness activity during the current 2025-2026 influenza season and wishes to keep the public informed. While there has been an increase in persons presenting with fever and respiratory symptoms, the majority of cases are mild and are being effectively managed within the health system. Some individuals have been diagnosed with respiratory tract infections caused by influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The Ministry is implementing appropriate public health measures and encourages simple preventive actions to help protect individuals, families, and the wider community.

To help the public better understand the current situation, it is important to be aware of who may be affected and the symptoms to look out for. Everyone can be affected by influenza. It spreads easily from person to person through interpersonal contact. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, headache, body and joint aches, fatigue, nausea, and, in some cases, shortness of breath. Most people recover from the flu without complications; however, individuals who are considered high-risk or medically vulnerable may develop more serious illness. The most vulnerable groups include adults over 65 years of age, children under 5 years, pregnant women, and persons with underlying chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems. The serious flu complications can include bacterial pneumonia, worsening of existing medical conditions, hospitalization, and, in rare cases, death.

Most people with flu recover at home with rest and supportive care. However, anyone experiencing severe symptoms-such as difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, chest pain, confusion, or worsening of existing health conditions-should seek medical attention immediately. High-risk individuals, including adults over 65, children under 5, pregnant women, and persons with chronic health conditions, should be particularly vigilant. Early care can help prevent complications and ensure better outcomes.

The Ministry of Health encourages everyone to take the following simple steps to protect themselves and others:

  • Practice hand hygiene- Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Practice – respiratory etiquette -Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing or wear a face mask.
  • Stay home if you are unwell and experiencing a fever and respiratory symptoms.
  • Ensure high-risk individuals receive seasonal flu vaccinations as recommended.

While practicing preventive measures is important for everyone, vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against serious complications from seasonal influenza. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recommends that high-risk groups—including older adults, persons with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women-receive the influenza vaccine. Frontline health workers should also be prioritized to maintain essential health services and protect themselves and their patients. The influenza vaccine is available at all of the health centres in St. Kitts & Nevis.

The Ministry of Health urges everyone to practice preventive measures, including good hygiene and staying home when unwell. High-risk individuals should get vaccinated and seek prompt medical care if severe symptoms develop. For more information or assistance, contact your nearest health centre. Let us work together to protect the health and well-being of our people in 2026. Happy New Year!
